Description :
▸ “Isolation Forests” is a series of paintings that I have been developing since 2020, based on photographs taken during the Labverde artistic residency, held in 2018 at the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, in the Amazon. The paintings show expressive aspects that are not always visible in the photographs that originated them. Through the paintings I try to evoke the multisensory sensations of being immersed inside the forest, witnessing a kind of orchestrated chaos between seeing and not seeing. The view of the forest differs from the traditional perspective of landscape representation, as the forest surrounds us on all sides and does not allow the adoption of a vanishing point and a clear horizon line, affecting us in an immersive and luminous way. It is also worth noting my interest for the spiritual, mythical and ecological aspects of the Amazon rainforest, which has been so threatened in recent years. The aesthetic delight aims to involve the spectator sensorially and affectively, thus making him more sensitive to the importance of preserving forests. The title of the series originated from the situation of social isolation that we experiencied due to the Covid 19 pandemic, since the paintings began to be made precisely at this time. Thus, the “Fo- rests of Isolation” refer both to the fact of being solitary immersed in the forest and to the very feeling of being lost in oneself during social isolation.
▸ The series “Brasa Brasil” presents itself as a kind of counterpoint to “Forests of Isolation”, denouncing the barbarity of criminal forest fires, increasingly frequent in our environment. Unlike the paintings of the green forests, the images here are not based on photographs taken by me, but merge references found on the internet, made by various photojournalists. The daily tragedy that we are getting used to in the news about deforestation and the advance of illegal mining in the Amazon takes on spectacular contours when it becomes painting. The reddish and coppery tones of the fire take us into a kind of aesthetic convulsion, at once sublime and threatening.
In addition to the paintings, I also present the video “Amazônia Insomnia”, which I made in 2018 during the Labverde Residency. The video contains images of the reflections of the forest in the water, which were mirrored and multiplied, forming a kind of hypnotic kaleidoscope. The images gained a dreamlike atmosphere, evoking the spirits of the forest and the ayahuasca rituals. The soundtrack was composed from the sounds captured in the forest. The video has already been presented in different ways, both on individual monitors and projections, as well as in an installation form and in an immersive experience with 3 projectors, involving the entire body of the viewer in a circular screen.
